With Memory Wipe, The A. V. Clubtakes a look at some of our formative favorites with clearer eyes and asks that all- important question: Were they really that great to begin with? This installment looks at Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, the second most popular movie of 1. ![]() My family owned about three movies when I was growing up. We were a library clan; if we wanted to watch something, we’d either pick it up or order it from the Cuyahoga County Public Library, a system that worked most of the time. But for whatever reason, we actually owned hard copies of a few things. One was Fantasia, which I’ve still never watched. Another was a dubbed copy of Amadeus that one of my parents’ friends must have given them. I have no idea where that copy of Robin Hood came from—a friend of my parents’ as a gift to us kids, maybe?—but seeing as how it was the only movie in the house that both my brother and I agreed on at any given time, I must have watched that tape 1. I haven’t seen it in at least 2. I can still recite portions of it backward and forward (“No blades, no bows. Leave your weapons here.”), and (until recently) I remembered it fondly, thinking wistfully of a heroic Kevin Costner sweeping his Maid Marian around on a rope. Like so much media from our collective youths, though, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves doesn’t hold up. Twenty- three years after its theatrical release, revisiting the film is a positively painful experience, especially in the almost three- hour director’s cut available to stream via Amazon. Thieves is a clunky, poorly acted movie arguably intended for adults but embraced by kids who just didn’t know better. He’s willing to sacrifice his hand to save a friend at the beginning of the movie, but, once returned to England, he acts like a petulant child, teasing his new friend Azeem about love. And though it seems noble that he eventually decides to take up with a band of outlaws and overthrow the corrupt sheriff, the film doesn’t actually explain why he’d do that, other than to imply that it was just the right thing to do. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio’s Marian is similarly wishy- washy, entering the film as a strong woman who’s skilled with a sword and exiting it as a lady barely capable of defending herself against an old witch’s prying claws. Speaking of Maid Marian and the film’s romantic element, woof. Though 1. 2th- century England certainly didn’t lend itself to lengthy love stories or even ideal matches, the fact that Marian would fall head over heels in L- O- V- E love with Robin after seeing his pale, naked ass through a waterfall, well, it’s comical at best. Sure, she may have fallen in lust, but the film lets the camera linger on Mastrantonio’s gaping face in the scene, suggesting that, as if struck by Cupid’s arrow, she’s simply fallen for a guy she barely knows. And while this trope isn’t uncommon in films or in fiction in general, it’s just another example of how Prince Of Thieves’ plot is spotty at best, relying on viewers to already know the story and fill in the gaps themselves. Much has been made—rightfully so—of the film’s treatment of Morgan Freeman’s Azeem character, the Moor that escapes a Jerusalem jail with Robin and is summarily indebted to him by decree of Allah. While the film’s dialogue certainly does Azeem no favors, calling him “the painted man” and making a joke out of his faith a few times, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves still mostly contains a message about acceptance of others, with Freeman’s Azeem overall reading as a clever, loyal, and learned man. ![]() He should never be counted on to deliver long blocks of “sincere” dialogue.) The film doesn’t handle paganism as well, with both Alan Rickman’s sheriff and his witch mother Mortianna stumbling comically around runes, pentagrams, and dry- ice steam baths. Mortianna is especially ridiculous, with British actress Geraldine Mc. Ewan clad in a thin, balding gray wig, oddly colored contacts, and one really long fingernail, which she drags across a metal tray at one point, making a noise that turns my stomach to this day. She’s meant to be this hideous, devious witch, and while Mc. 23 years after its release, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves is barely watchable. When Apollo Creed is killed in a match against a powerful Soviet boxer, Rocky decides to challenge him himself. Ewan arguably plays that role well, it’s so ridiculously over the top and comical that she practically becomes a Disney character, albeit one with a penchant for spit and blood. Mortianna also features prominently the film’s lengthy and uncomfortable attempted- rape scene. While I remembered this scene from watching the movie growing up, I don’t remember it being so horrifying, as well as so comically played. Rickman’s sheriff is pushy and jovial as he forces Marian’s legs apart, and while his jokes about how hard it is for him to get, well, hard, are probably supposed to be funny, 2. Other aspects of the rape scene are—understandably—just disgusting. In particular, Mortianna’s claim that Marian is “ripe” and “will bear a son” after touching her stomach is hideously crass and downright icky, on top of being (along with the actual rape, for crying out loud) utterly and completely inappropriate for the movie’s PG- 1. And that really underscores the movie’s biggest problem. Watching the movie in a society 2. I found myself wondering just who Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves was for in the first place. If the experiences of my friends, loved ones, and coworkers are any indication, it was meant for kids with a taste for action and explosions with few scruples about either acting or dialogue. But given the movie’s cast—Costner, Rickman, Freeman, Mastrantonio, Christian Slater, and a brief appearance from Sean Connery—it seems like the filmmakers and producers at least tried to approach the story with some seriousness.
Certain characters, like Mike Mc. Shane’s Friar Tuck, are no doubt meant to add levity to the hand- chopping and macabre production. But others, like Rickman’s sheriff, sweep so wildly from horrifically serious to ridiculously comical that it seems like, halfway through the production, the cast and director just said, “Fuck it. Let’s have a little fun with this one.” And while that’s the kind of stuff that makes a movie memorable to a 1. Nottingham’s employ noticing—it’s also the kind of stuff that makes a movie damn near unwatchable for a 3. Despite what I thought 2. Black powder and Christian Slater are cool and all, but real dramatic successes come when a film has both heart and a slate of talented actors who aren’t just leaning on their oversized patchwork capes to tell the story. When Robin and his Moorish companion come to England and the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, he decides to fight back as an outlaw. While Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu are few of the working actresses from the 2. Influences for Bollywood. Gokulsing and Dissanayake identify six major influences that have shaped the conventions of Indian popular cinema. Examples of this influence include the techniques of a side story, back- story and story within a story. Indian popular films often have plots which branch off into sub- plots; such narrative dispersals can clearly be seen in the 1. Khalnayak and Gardish. These regional traditions include the Jatra of Bengal, the Ramlila of Uttar Pradesh, and the Terukkuttu of Tamil Nadu. The Parsi plays contained crude humour, melodious songs and music, sensationalism and dazzling stagecraft. Indian filmmakers, while enhancing the elements of fantasy so pervasive in Indian popular films, used song and music as a natural mode of articulation in a given situation in their films. There is a strong Indian tradition of narrating mythology, history, fairy stories and so on through song and dance. However, they demonstrated how this creation intersected with people's day to day lives in complex and interesting ways. An early example of this approach was in Mani Ratnam's Bombay (1. Baz Luhrmann stated that his musical film Moulin Rouge! The critical and financial success of Moulin Rouge! Rahman, an Indian film composer, wrote the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams, and a musical version of Hum Aapke Hain Koun has played in London's West End. In 1. 97. 8, technopop pioneers Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto of the Yellow Magic Orchestra produced an electronic album Cochin Moon based on an experimentalfusion between electronic music and Bollywood- inspired Indian music. Dre, was lifted from Lata Mangeshkar's . Burman compositions, with Asha Bhosle as the singer, into an album You've Stolen My Heart: Songs from R. D. Burman's Bollywood, which was nominated for . Filmi music composed by A. Rahman (who would later win two Academy Awards for the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack) has frequently been sampled by musicians elsewhere in the world, including the Singaporean artist Kelly Poon, the Uzbek artist Iroda Dilroz, the French rap group La Caution, the American artist Ciara, and the German band L. Many Asian Underground artists, particularly those among the overseas Indian diaspora, have also been inspired by Bollywood music. Genre conventions. Melodrama and romance are common ingredients to Bollywood films. Pictured Achhut Kanya (1. Bollywood films are mostly musicals and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of song- and- dance numbers woven into the script. A film's success often depends on the quality of such musical numbers. They are called Masala films, after the Hindi word for a spice mixture. Like masalas, these movies are a mixture of many things such as action, comedy, romance and so on. Most films have heroes who are able to fight off villains all by themselves. Bollywood plots have tended to be melodramatic. They frequently employ formulaic ingredients such as star- crossed lovers and angry parents, love triangles, family ties, sacrifice, corrupt politicians, kidnappers, conniving villains, courtesans with hearts of gold, long- lost relatives and siblings separated by fate, dramatic reversals of fortune, and convenient coincidences. There have always been Indian films with more artistic aims and more sophisticated stories, both inside and outside the Bollywood tradition (see Parallel Cinema). They often lost out at the box office to movies with more mass appeal. Bollywood conventions are changing, however. A large Indian diaspora in English- speaking countries, and increased Western influence at home, have nudged Bollywood films closer to Hollywood models. Strangely, it was after Independence the censor board came into being and so did all the strictures. Though these changes can widely be seen in contemporary Bollywood, traditional conservative ways of Indian culture continue to exist in India outside the industry and an element of resistance by some to western- based influences. It attracts thousands of aspiring actors and actresses, all hoping for a break in the industry. Models and beauty contestants, television actors, theatre actors and even common people come to Mumbai with the hope and dream of becoming a star. Just as in Hollywood, very few succeed. Since many Bollywood films are shot abroad, many foreign extras are employed too. There have been some exceptions, of which one recent example is the hit film Rang De Basanti, where the lead actress is Alice Patten, an Englishwoman. Kisna, Lagaan, and The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey also featured foreign actors. Of late, Emma Brown Garett, an Australian born actress, has starred in a few Indian films. Bollywood can be very clannish, and the relatives of film- industry insiders have an edge in getting coveted roles in films or being part of a film's crew. 8/15/2017 0 Comments Prestige 2006 Watch OnlineThe Prestige - Trailer - You. Hideous Creatures That Deserve Your Unconditional Love. We can’t all be puppies—or even capybaras, for that matter. There’s a whole world of critters whose inner beauty goes unnoticed. Perfectly snuggly critters like naked mole rats have been mocked and called things like “the stuff of nightmares” or “the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen.” The truth is, so many of nature’s ugly animals have incredible qualities that deserve to be recognized. Below are just a few of the most hideous beautiful weirdos who deserve our love and respect. Naked mole rat Scientific name: Heterocephalus glaber. Habitat: For millions of years, these little cherubs have lived in large underground colonies, mainly located in central- east Africa. They can live with up to 3. Lifestyle: Naked mole rats eat roots and tubers, in addition to poop, according to the San Diego Zoo. I’m sorry. Adorable fact: Naked mole rats are some of the most impressive creatures on the planet. In addition to the fact that they don’t age and are apparently impervious to cancer, they can survive up to 1. By understanding how naked mole rats can survive so long without oxygen, we may be able to develop technology to keep victims of heart attacks or strokes alive longer. I can understand why people think so, because they’re so unusual looking, but if you get to know them, they’re actually very gentle, they’re friendly creatures.”8) Tufted deer. Scientific name: Elaphodus cephalophus. Habitat: This small, vampire- looking species of deer is endemic to China and Myanmar (Burma). Lifestyle: Tufted deer are herbivores. Their diet consists of fruit, grass, bamboo and herbs—not human flesh. Adorable fact: Despite their bloodthirsty appearance, tufted deer are actually quite shy. Adorable fact: Though their strange faces might seem like an impairment, star- nosed moles are extremely quick. One San Diego woman who was there called it a “pathway of bodies.”. The fastest is 1. Pink fairy armadillo Scientific name: Chlamyphorus truncates. Habitat: This sweet, shy little guy is native to central Argentina, where it lives in dry grasslands and plains. Lifestyle: Not much is known about the pink fairy armadillo’s lifestyle, as it hasn’t been studied much. According to Cancellare, the pink fairy armadillo that looks like a “Furby covered with sashimi” is very popular in the illegal pet trade. While the IUCN doesn’t technically consider the pink fairy armadillo endangered—it’s “data deficient,” due to how little its studied—the organization does note how at- risk it is due to the black market. I guess the fact that it’s the smallest armadillo in the world is sort of cute. Axolotl. Scientific name: Ambystoma mexicanum. Habitat: Axolotl are unusual in that they exist in one place in the wild—a lake called Xochimilco, just South of Mexico City. Lifestyle: According to St. It doesn’t metamorphose to become terrestrial.”Adorable fact: Overall, axolotls are pretty chill, arguably too laid back—they have no real way to defend themselves in the wild. Also called the grooming finger, the aye- aye’s third digit is much more slender that the other four fingers and is used as a hunting tool. The aye- aye uses this finger to tap on trees to listen for insect larvae. Once it hears something, the aye aye then uses its other claws to dig into the bark, then dig out invertebrates using its long toilet claw.”While toilet claws don’t sound very cute, the aye aye is overall pretty adorable. Blobfish. Scientific name: Psychrolutes marcidus. Habitat: This miserable cutie lives off the coast of Australia and Tasmania, at depths of 3. Lifestyle: The blobfish is unsurprisingly oafish. According to Creature Features: Twenty- Five Animals Explain Why They Look the Way They Do, by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page, the blobfish’s diet mainly consists of mollusks, crabs, and sea urchins—probably sadness, too. According to Mental Floss, it doesn’t really hunt, rather, it just sits at the bottom of the ocean and opens its mouth when something tasty swims by. Adorable fact: The “mascot” for blobfish was found in 2. New Zealand. This specimen was affectionately named “Mr. Sadly, the very dead Mr. Blobby now resides in Australian Museum’s Ichthyology Collection, in Sydney.“The fixation process tightened Mr. Blobby’s skin and collapsed his—or her—snout,” Mark Mc. Grouther, the museum’s fish manager, told Smithsonian. Blobby.” To be fair, at the bottom of the ocean (and alive), our frowny friend probably wouldn’t look so curmudgeonly. Pour one out for Mr. Blobby, gone but never forgotten. Black rain frog Scientific name: Breviceps fuscus. Habitat: According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the grumpy frog only lives in the mountains of South Africa. Lifestyle: These are burrowing frogs that spend most of their lives underground. We don’t know much about their eating habits, though. Adorable fact: There’s actually a legitimate reason why the black rain frog looks like an angry lump. Angeli, a conservation biologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, told Gizmodo. These puffy little frogs are the product of millions of years of survival in a harsh world!”1) Potoo bird. Scientific name: Nyctibius griseus. Habitat: These bizarre birdies live in the forests of Central and South America, even though I wish they lived by me in Brooklyn. Lifestyle: The Potoo is a nocturnal bird, as evidenced by its enormous eyes.“The large eyes of this bird help it find flying insects at night,” Cancellare explained. Adorable fact: Sometimes, the Potoo likes to pretend it’s a tree. Please imagine this goofy ass bird trying to blend in with anything and try not to laugh. Watch Beverly Hills 9. Dragon Ball Z is arguably the most popular anime on the planet, but its accompanying movies. The films are often repeat stories of whichever saga they happen to set in, adding nothing new to the franchise, while they are generally considered to be out of place within the DBZ canon. There are some notable exceptions, though. The more recent movies are part of the official Dragon Ball continuity, while a couple of the earlier specials have recently been canonized by both the manga and the anime. Whether or not a movie is canon won’t necessarily impact its ranking, although expect to find the movies that go out of their way to confuse the timeline lower down on the list. All 1. 5 legitimate Dragon Ball Z movies are featured, of course. You Are Reading: Every Dragon Ball Z Season And Saga, Ranked Worst To Best. He is first seen as the. The Z-Fighters must contend with Lord Beerus, the God of Destruction, but only a God can fight a God, and none of them are Gods. However with the creation of the. Dragon Ball Z is arguably the most popular anime on the planet, but its accompanying movies well, not so much. The films are often repeat stories of whichever saga. The Trunks and Bardock TV specials are included as well, and so are three straight- to- video animations. The four Dragon Ball movies, as well as GT’s A Hero’s Legacy, are not up for consideration. Let’s begin Every Movie in the Dragon Ball Z Franchise, Ranked. The Return of Cooler. Cooler is one of two movie villains who’ve appeared more than once, and after the reasonable success of Cooler’s Revenge, we honestly wish he hadn’t returned at all. The Return of Cooler tries desperately to find a legitimate reason that Cooler could have survived being literally blasted into the sun. Support the official.Dragon Ball Z opening title card in the original Japanese version. Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of the adult Goku who, along with his companions, defends the. ![]() The result is a unique take on the sci- fi genre gone horribly wrong. While there are moments to enjoy in the movie, like Goku and Vegeta’s first ever team- up, we’re too busy trying to work out what the Big Gete Star actually does, and why Meta- Cooler would enslave New Namek of all planets, to actually pay attention to what’s happening. Goku’s fight with Cooler features some of the worst animation in the series, and the subplots are completely uninteresting. Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo fighting Cooler’s minions on Namek is way too reminiscent of the Frieza saga, while the minions themselves have zero personality and are far too easy to beat. Finally, the movie doesn’t even try to work within DBZ canon; Gohan’s apparently unable to turn Super Saiyan despite having already trained in the Time Chamber. ![]() It’s just another reason that The Return of Cooler has no place in the Dragon Ball franchise. Bio- Broly. Whatever your thoughts on the Dragon Ball movies’ most profitable villain, this is undeniably a sorry way for Broly to go out. In the third and worst of the Broly movies, the Legendary Super Saiyan is cloned by scientists, who are searching for the strongest fighter in the world to test their bio- warriors. The film has almost the exact same premise as The World’s Strongest– the second Dragon Ball Z movie, and one of the most popular. There are plenty of unimaginative ideas on this list, but rehashing the same story just to bring Broly back (and sludge Broly at that) is the Dragon Ball movies at peak unoriginality. If there is a redeeming quality to Bio- Broly, it’s that Gohan, Vegeta, and (mostly) Goku are absent, while Goten, Trunks, Android 1. Krillin are left to fight Broly (Mr. It’s an interesting team- up, which offers a new dynamic and some funny moments. Most of the jokes, however, don’t land, and serve only to weigh down the action, which in itself is disappointing. The Z- Fighters get beaten down (as usual) until they find an unlikely way to win. And that’s the movie. Episode of Bardock. The third of the original video animations and first on this list, Episode of Bardock can be loosely compared to The Return of Cooler. It’s a sci- fi story that’s been told a million times before, but at least it has a comprehensible, flowing narrative, even if it’s not a particularly strong one, and its attempts to tie the Super Saiyan legend together are laudable. It also poses no threat to the Dragon Ball Z timeline, given that it’s set roughly a thousand years before the main story takes place. These may not be glowing compliments, but Episode of Bardock is at least the first watchable movie on this list. Its biggest flaw is that it tries to redeem its main character. Bardock – The Father of Goku is a glowing testament to the Saiyan race; Bardock is violent, abrasive, and has little regard for even his own family. The fact that he would later (or earlier) become the legendary Super Saiyan for a race he had only just met is a pretty cheap trick to pull, and to have Bardock go back in time in the first place is fan service taking priority over viable storytelling. Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. Speaking of fan service: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, the very first of the original video animations. The special pits Earth’s heroes against some of the most popular villains in Dragon Ball, and also some of the not- so popular ones. Goku faces off against Cooler, Future Trunks returns to fight Frieza, and Gohan and Piccolo take on Turles and Lord Slug (more on them later). Of course, this is all a ruse put in place by Tuffle survivor Hatchiyack, the big bad of the piece, who is eventually defeated by a Kamehameha, Final Flash, Masenko, and Burning Attack combo. This is another movie that doesn’t really have a place in the series, but it’s forgivable in this case. Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans is pure fan service, top to bottom, with Frieza returning along with the movie villains, Future Trunks making an appearance, and a devastating combination of all our favorite attacks to end the day. Fan service is absolutely forgivable when it’s just fan service. Unfortunately, the special tries to tell a story, which is ultimately impossible to take seriously. It’s worth watching for the Dragon Ball callbacks, but as an original, standalone piece, Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans adds nothing new to the franchise. The Tree of Might. Now that we’re done with the genuinely bad Dragon Ball Z spin- offs, we usher in a new era of perfectly acceptable, if slightly dull movies and specials. We start with The Tree of Might, which is just fine, but that’s all it is. There’s just nothing particularly memorable, or even exciting included in the third DBZ movie to set it apart from the rest. In fact, it’s the same story as the actually canon Saiyan saga, in that a surviving Saiyan lands on Earth to inadvertently reveal new information to Goku. Turles as a concept is an interesting idea, and he and Goku share some well- choreographed battle sequences, but for every action scene, there’s a Gohan and Icarus scene to cancel it out, while the villainous minions are once again wasted. Not to mention the fact that Turles regrows Gohan’s tail. It’s such a small detail but so blatantly a plot device, without any explanation or build- up, that it means The Tree of Might has to fall below the other par- for- the- course DBZ movies on this list. Broly – Second Coming. Second Coming is as bland as Bio- Broly when it comes to its plot, but it does at least have one thing going for it. First and foremost, Second Coming doesn’t pretend that it’s anything but an action flick. You can sit and laugh through the first half of the film, which features some strong Goten and Trunks moments, and a wacky dinosaur subplot that wouldn’t hurt if it didn’t exist. All you need to know is that Broly is back. The second half allows you to switch your brain off entirely, and watch Gohan and Broly’s battle. The action is actually really strong here, and Gohan gets the spotlight for the first time since growing up. Goten and Trunks get in on the action, somehow Videl doesn’t die, and then Goku shows up because the movie (like Dragon Ball in general) can’t follow through on having someone else be the hero. The family Kamehameha that follows is an iconic Dragon Ball Z moment, and it rounds off a high- tempo sequel that offends no one. Super Android 1. 3! Super Android 1. 3! The films relies entirely on action; we get battles in the city and the arctic, which are both Dragon Ball firsts (not including Trunks’ future timeline). Vegeta and Piccolo get epic introductions, while the triple Super Saiyan power up is equally epic, given that Super Saiyans were still relatively fresh at the time. It’s also the first time we see Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and Piccolo fight the same enemy all at once. Of course, Goku winds up saving the day, but his absorption of the Spirit Bomb was unique at the time, so we’ll let that one slide. The villains are completely void of personality, as you’d expect, but Androids 1. Gero lives on inside a super computer for absolutely no reason, because the movie could have played out exactly the same had he not been there. His involvement only further highlights how out of place the movie is within the Dragon Ball continuity, and how similar it is to the Android and Cell sagas. Like the entries before it, Super Android 1. Lord Slug. Lord Slug sees the return of a Namekian villain in a movie that tries to remind us of Dragon Ball’s King Piccolo, with mixed results. The titular character arrives on Earth and conquers the planet with the intention of using it as a spaceship. It’s hardly revolutionary, but it does offer us new information about the history of Namek, which at least gives Piccolo something to do in the movie. His extended battle with Slug’s henchman is some of the best Piccolo action in the movie series, while his energy transfer ultimately wins Goku the battle. Gohan, Icarus, and even Chi- Chi also get some time in the limelight, before Goku takes center stage with a new transformation. In the lead up to Super Saiyan, but without any idea what it would look like, Toei ran with their best guess as to how they thought Super Saiyan would turn out. Looking back, it’s confusing and predictable (kind of like the rest of the movie), but it rounds off a pretty unique action sequence in a movie that doesn’t get enough credit. The first half of the film is strong enough; Whis’ training of Goku and Vegeta is the highlight, but even that only serves to showcase just how out of hand the power scale has become by this point. Every Dragon Ball Z Season And Saga, Ranked Worst To Best. Is there any anime more influential than Dragon Ball Z? With almost 3. 00 episodes under its belt, DBZ has captivated audiences for years with its brutal action sequences and eclectic roster of characters. During that time, the franchise has its fair share of highs and lows, with jaw- dropping storylines and. Though most series are split into respective seasons, Dragon Ball Z is usually divided into shorter story arcs known as Sagas, which is what we’ll be using to rank this list. It doesn’t matter if some Sagas are shorter or longer than others. They will each be based on the same grade as everything else which includes writing, animation, storylines, and of course, how epic the fights are. From Goku’s reveal as a Saiyan to the climactic showdown with Kid Buu, here is Every Dragon Ball Z Saga And Season, Ranked Worst To Best. Saga. The first entry on our list deals with a newly escaped Garlic Jr. With Goku lost somewhere out in space, it’s up to Krillin and Gohan to put an end to Garlic’s heinous plan. The weakest Saga in DBZ, the Garlic Jr. Saga was created solely for the anime, because at this time it had already caught up to the events in the manga. The creators scrambled and came up with this storyline, though it probably would have been better had the anime just taken a short hiatus. There are little redeeming factors here, with most of the narrative just dragging along. While there are enjoyable segments, like Kami’s character building, most of it is rather pointless. Especially the new addition of Krillin’s shallow girlfriend, Maron, who gets a shout out for being the most annoying character on the show. Great Saiyaman Saga. Most consider the Great Saiyaman Saga the low point of the Dragon Ball Z franchise, and it’s not hard to see why. All the wonderful and rich character building previously from Gohan, who was originally supposed to become the series’ new primary protagonist, is completely thrown out of the window. Instead, Gohan focuses more on his academic studies, and adopts the persona of the Great Saiyaman, a bumbling superhero who would have fit right in with Adam West’s rendition of Batman. Besides being completely different in tone that the rest of the series, this chapter is frequently lambasted because, in the end, nothing really happens. It chronicles Gohan’s high school years, but they never really amount to anything. It all seems like filler until the next big bad guy shows up. The only plus in this Saga gets is because it introduces Videl, Gohan’s soon to be martial artist wife, who is simply awesome. Namek Saga. If fans thought it was torture waiting around for Goku to show up in the first season, then they must have been pulling their hair out by the time the Namek Saga rolled around. Taking place directly after Vegeta and Goku’s epic battle on Earth, Bulma, Gohan and Krillin journey to the planet Namek to search for the Dragon Balls. During this time the audience patiently waits for some action as Goku recovers in the hospital, waits while Goku finds a spaceship, waits around while Goku continuously trains on the spaceship . The main hero roles fall on the shoulders of Gohan and Krillin, who continuously get their butts kicked in almost every fight they get into. Thankfully this Saga is not a complete misfire thanks to some increase in Vegeta screen time, and the introduction of main baddie, Frieza. World Tournament Saga. Taking place several years after the events of the Cell Games, the World Tournament Saga has the entire gang of Z Fighters reassemble to compete in the 2. Tenka- ichi Bukokai. Even Goku, who had died previously, is allowed to return to Earth for a day to compete. On paper, this should have made a highly enjoyable Saga, with all the main characters making a comeback to take part in a friendly martial arts tournament, which made the earlier seasons of Dragon Ball such a hit. Unfortunately, it’s a concept that isn’t fully developed and comes across as rather flat. The tournaments of seasons past worked because they were either more intense or more comedic, and this Saga is lacking in both departments. Though some of it is fun, like the Z fighters mopping the floor with the early competition or watching the blossoming relationship between Gohan and Videl, the World Tournament Saga just doesn’t stack up to some of the other seasons. Babidi Saga. Not quite as comedic as the Great Saiyaman Saga, but not as serious as the Frieza or upcoming Buu storylines, the Babidi Saga is basically a setup of better things to come. Taking place after the World Tournament, the Z Fighters come across the evil wizard Babidi, who is attempting to resurrect the powerful entity known as Buu. The first half has our heroes easily fight and wipe out every pathetic excuse for a threat in a blink of an eye, which is entertaining to watch but doesn’t exactly hold that much weight. The best part is looking over the very creative monster designs, like Pui Pui or the Demon King Dabura. Eventually the story gets more interesting once Vegeta is taken over by mind control and made to fight his old rival Goku, which is the highlight of the story. The pure spectacle of the fight alone is impressive, even if it is a bit undercut later on when it is revealed that Goku had been hiding his ability to turn Super Saiyan 3 the whole time. Fusion Saga. After the horrific transformation of Buu into the eviler Super Buu, the Z Fighters are forced to resort to extreme measures to combat the new threat. If they have any chance to defeat him, our heroes must combine their powers together with the newly introduced technique of fusion, which merges two fighters into a far stronger single warrior. It’s the new technique of fusion that breathes new life into Dragon Ball Z’s fifteenth Saga. First we have the cocky and childish fusion of Gotenks, who can be rather annoying at times but has a wide arrange of some of the most creative attacks in DBZ history. Not to mention that at the tail end of this Saga, we have the long awaited fusion of Goku and Vegeta, Vegito, who is crazy strong. The writing here isn’t as tight as it is in earlier seasons, but the scope and length of battles are certainly worth giving this Saga a repeated watch. Perfect Cell Saga. Kicking off our top ten is the storyline in which the dastardly Cell continues his quest to reach his Perfect Form. After absorbing Android 1. Cell begins looking far and wide for Android 1. Little does Cell know that he’ll have to go against a newly powered up Vegeta and Trunks who are standing in his way, and have just ascended to the next Super Saiyan level. Of course due to Vegeta’s monstrous ego, Cell is able to easily achieve his Perfect Form, leaving the world in dire straits. When the Saiyan Prince finds that the Semi- Perfect Form of Cell is not challenging enough, he allows the villain to absorb Android 1. He gets more than he bargained for when Perfect Cell makes short work of both Vegeta and his son. This short Saga may be a solid addition, but it lacks the unpredictability of the Imperfect Cell Saga or the intensity of the upcoming Cell Games. Still, it’s rather fun to watch Vegeta eat his words after he foolishly underestimates Perfect Cell. Captain Ginyu Saga. With the painfully slow events of the Namaek Saga finally coming to a close, the series picks up again with the introduction of the Ginyu Force, Frieza’s elite fighting team (and occasional dance squad). It kicks off with Goku finally making his way to planet Namek to battle Burter and Jeice, two of Ginyu’s strongest fighters. They’re no match for a newly powered up Goku however, who soon takes on their leader Captain Ginyu. Realizing that he’s no match for the Saiyan, Ginyu performs his body switching technique (“Ginyu is Goku? What?!”). This saga has a ton of highlights, most notably the addition of Captain Ginyu who, even though he isn’t the main antagonist of the season, is one of the most entertaining. His body change power and love for dance make him a formidable foe, especially when the Z Fighters are concerned with trying to preserve Goku’s body while still attempting to defeat Ginyu. It’s a battle of wits that unfortunately ends bad with Ginyu’s soul being trapped inside a frog. Kid Buu Saga. The sixteenth and final Saga in the Dragon Ball Z series, the Kid Buu story arc is one with the highest stakes in the entire franchise. It’s hard to believe after Cell and Frieza that the creators of the program could still find ways for new villains to appear threatening, but Kid Buu takes the cake when he successfully destroys planet Earth in a psychotic meltdown. As most of our heroes are obliterated in the blast, it’s up to survivors Goku and Vegeta to defeat the little pink monster once and for all. The scope and pure spectacle of the final fight in the series is not only one of the best in DBZ, but in all of anime. In one of the few times in the series, Goku and Vegeta actually work together to defeat their opponent, which is maybe something they should have considered from the start. Still, even though Kid Buu is psychotic, he doesn’t quite stack up to more sophisticated villains in the past like Frieza and Cell. That lack of nuance is more than made up for however with Vegeta’s character arc, which is both emotional and thought- provoking. Android Saga. Fans seem to love the Androids Saga for the fact that it’s a crazy mishmash of DBZ and Terminator. All hell breaks loose when the evil Dr. Gero unleashes his deadly Androids to wreak havoc on the world. The Z fighters are forced to initially fight off Androids 1. Androids 1. 7 and 1. Things get worse when the Android siblings decide to hunt down and kill Goku in his weakened state, forcing the other Z Fighters into a no- win scenario. The Androids Saga is a thoroughly enjoyable season that is chalk full of great fights. Unfortunately, Goku, in typical Goku fashion, is absent from most of it due to a heart condition. Dragon.
